This is a short diary to take a break and enjoy some fruits of our labor intensive environmental activism. Seldom do we see such spectacular results so fast Usually fighting environmental polluters, degraders and climate change action obstructionists is a one step forward two steps back affair.
This time fighting Heartland Institute, the climate change denial thinktank (oxymoron alert!) we had a lot of outside help coming mostly from Heartland itself. Whoever thought up the idea of this now infamous billboard should not be overlooked.
But first, credit where credit is due goes to scientist and water expert Peter Gleick of the Pacific Institute for his courage in risking his career to reveal the diabolical scheme of the Heartland Institute to indoctrinate American school children into it's climate denial misinformation campaign.
Why do I say that the Heartland Institute is down for the count? Because it's President and CEO just said so in his closing remarks at their annual (now final) ICCC "International Conference on Climate Change"
From Brendan DeMelle at desmogblog who excerpted these remarks from Bast's closing remarks at the ICCC.
"I hope to see you at a future conference, but at this point we have no plans to do another ICCC.”
Nothing like a major appeal for money to sound the desperation bell
“Please consider supporting the Heartland Institute. These conferences are expensive, and I’m not a good fundraiser so as a result I don’t raise enough money to cover them, we really scramble to make payroll as a result to cover these expenses. If you can afford to make a contribution, please do. If you know someone, if you’ve got a rich uncle or somebody in the family or somebody that you work with, please give them a call and ask them if they would consider making a tax-deductable contribution to the Heartland Institute.”
So this isn't completely over, not by a long shot. But for all our petition signing and calls made to Heartland sponsors we deserve a pat on the back. And thanks to Kos for providing this forum to make some good change in our world.
