From my day to day experiences in school (which is now over where I am, yay!) occasionally things that I have often wanted to blog about. So, now I am. It'll be a different topic each time dealing with a different political or social issue that somehow managed to come up in some form. This diary will be about the up and coming presidential election. Now look below the emblem and (hopefully) enjoy.
I attend a majority black school in a majority black city (I don't feel like mentioning which one yet), but most of my (admittedly brief) discussions on this topic have been with white and latino/a people.
The first time I can actually remember this subject coming up is overhearing a girl in English class (she's white) make a comment about how this election "we need a Republican because the Democrat didn't go so well this time." I talked to this same girl some months late about who she plans to vote for (this year will be her first time voting, I will unfortunately, not be old enough to vote until next year) and she hadn't decided whom she would vote for, saying she needed time to research the candidates. Something I would like to point out is that she specifically mentioned she wouldn't vote for OR against Obama just because he's black something I think is noteworthy because I feel unfortunately that is more open-minded than the majority of students at my school.
I had a similar conversation with a Latina girl about the same thing and she basically said the same thing about as the last needing to research the candidates, though honestly, I feel like with her much of it is going to have to do with views on immigration. The importance of that issue to her has come up on more than one occasion. From a current events project she did on Alabama's strict immigration law (when it was still a current event) to her voicing her rather negative opinion of Arizona for their infamous papers please law and how many would look at her and immediately assume she's an illegal immigrant despite being born here. I'm not saying that is the only thing she cares about, but it is definitely way up there.
I talked to other students as well, but I don't want to bore anybody. I just wanted to provide a little insight into things from the prospective of future voters. Tell me in comments if you think I should do other diaries like this or if you would like to her about chats I had with other classmates? Thanks for reading.
