Today, June 12, is National Loving Day. http://en.wikipedia.org/...
On this day in 1967 the Supreme Court struck down all "anti-miscegenation" laws. The decision was Loving vs. Virginia which affirmed the right of Mildred and Richard Loving to be married. I know it's hard to believe, but in those days you couldn't just marry someone because you loved that person. That wasn't good enough, it had to be the right sort of person, the right sort of marriage. But 45 years ago today the Supreme Court ended all that foolishness, and today you can marry anyone you want. I'm sure glad we don't have laws like that any longer.
On the Loving Day website http://www.lovingday.org/ you can find Loving Day celebrations all over the country. Let's celebrate our right to love!
Let's all celebrate how the Lovings wrote to the Attorney General, who on their behalf then referred the case to the ACLU, a well respected American organization that all Attorneys General have been proud to work with closely, before and since then.
Let's also celebrate how the Supreme Court then voted unanimously to overturn those laws that had made some types of marriage illegal.
Imagine! It was illegal to marry someone you loved. I'm sure glad those days are gone. Thank goodness for our enlightened government and judiciary. It's so great to live in a country where the people in power make a point of looking out for all of our interests.
