Tonight's diary will be the last of this week. I don't know what next week's schedule will be, so be sure to check me out on teh Facebook and/or teh Twitter. :D
It's time for "this day in history." On June 13, 1966, the Supreme Court issued its landmark Miranda vs. Arizona decision, ruling that criminal suspects must be informed of their constitutional rights prior to questioning by police. So, at least until this version of SCOTUS thinks this decision should be overturned, these words will continue to be a part of the law enforcement community.
You have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a court of law.
You have the right to speak to an attorney.
If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.
Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?
On this date in 1971, the
New York Times began publishing the
Pentagon Papers, a secret study of America's involvement in Vietnam. Guess what? Things weren't going too swimmingly over there, and
our government knew right away that things weren't going too swimmingly over there.
Mark Van Doren was born on this date in 1894. His son was at the center of the big quiz show scandal in the 50s, and the elder Van Doren was one of this guy's professors at Columbia University. :)
Let's get SPARKy! :D I guess I should tell Hubby to look a little more closely at his X - Box. Check out this big 'ol boat! Oh man, I am now officially depressed - hope the mob didn't get him. :( Finally, we'll offset that mucho depressivo news about Mr. Goodfella with an "AAAAAAaaaaaaWWWWWWwwww!" moment. :D
On with The Rachel Maddow Show!
Ezra Klein is back again! Rachel must be on vacation or a book tour.
"Vague Against the Machine" - Mittens is beginning to reveal a health care plan of sorts...kind of...sort of. Well, what about what he did while he was Governator of MA? ;D Senator McCentury's plan was poo - pooed all around back in 2008. The MENSA folk don't think President Obama releases enough details?! OK, these were the same people who complained the HCR bill was too long; you can't have both, ya' maroons! Mittens is telling folks only enough information to not get the plastering on policy that Senator McCentury got in 2008, and he's doing it on purpose by his own admission. He wants to turn Medicaid over to the states that have the most loose regulations & put a cap on medical malpractice suits. That's about all we know for sure. Mittens wants to make health care more like the market; Ezra did a great job in 'splaining why health care AIN'T like the market forces. Why do I have "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" running through my head?? Robert Greenstein is in studio to discuss what few specifics there are to Mittens' HCR shtick. Fewer people will have health insurance, and way way more poor folks will be kicked off Medicaid. He would end up weakening the health insurance offered by employers. THAT fact further reinforces why health insurance SHOULD NOT be tied to your sparkin' job! Health insurance could end up being set up like the credit card industry is - going to the states with the sweetest deal for the health insurance industry.
"There's a Map for That" - We saw the warmest spring on record ever. There was a lovely colorful map of which states have gotten warmer more quickly in the last 40 years or so.
"The National Stifle Association" - A dozen states have passed voting laws that will curtail registrations for folk that usually vote Dem; these laws have been proposed by the GOBP. All this $hit is supposedly about preventing voter fraud. There has been little to no voter fraud ANYWHERE except in my fair state by the former MENSA IN SOS! Charlie White was convicted & everything. Guess where the newest hotbed of vote stifling is? MI, boys & girls! *&^%$#@! No MENSA candidate has won MI in a long damn time; Mittens thinks he might actually have a bit of a chance this year. Rev. David Bullock probably has some damn interesting observations about the voter suppression efforts in his state. Seniors on fixed incomes would have to pay for appropriate ID to be able to vote; that sounds like a poll tax to me, FOKRs!
"These Are the Drones You're Looking For" - We're #1 in the drone game. Drones are killing folk in Yemen & Pakistan. Once we're done in Afghanistan, there are plans to have more drones in other parts of the world. The rest of the world ain't crazy about our use of drones; we've got no problem with that. A Navy drone crashed on Monday in Maryland; it was a surveillance drone. That was a big 'ol mother! Hey! My fair state has a drone base! Why am I not surprised? I'll have to dig around to see how close I am to the thing. Spencer Ackerman gets drone duty.
"Decision 2012" - Gabby Giffords' assistant won the special election to finish out her term in Congress! :D North Dakota voters decided to NOT get rid of their property taxes? Well, how 'bout that?! "Religious liberty" in ND lost, too. San Diego is still counting votes in a municipal court judge election that might send a birther to the bench. OK! And, the dude's last name is "Kreep." ;D
