I just received a phone call from the Romney for president campaign. They apparently are calling all of the citizens of Holland to come to the rally he is having at Holland State Park next Tuesday. Either that, or the fact that I am on the mailing list for Huizinga (R- Hoekstra protege) allows this privilege. I am now torn as to whether to attend and protest or keep away. Hanging out on the route there is also a possibility.
The concept of needing to get tickets to go to a public park on one of the first weeks of the summer seems a bit odd. This must be a way of making sure that only 'acceptable' people are there. It is also interesting because there are a myriad of ways to get to the park that don't involve actually parking there.
There are public access points to the North that are attainable by the public but are not well marked. If you walk or swim in the water, the water and the very edge of the beach are considered public property and they cannot keep you from going in there.
This is also a very common place for boats of all kinds as well as jet skis to congregate.
The 'Big Red' lighthouse on the other side of the channel is also public property and can be accessed easily.
One last thought:
The people on the beach in Holland will probably be very white. They take the motto "you're not much if you're not Dutch" pretty seriously especially among the old timers. They also may not appreciate his Mormonism as they have a long standing problem with other faiths. It wasn't that long ago that the Reformed Church of America (a conservative Calvinistic tradition) and the Christian Reformed Church (an even more conservative Calvinistic breakaway sect) would not associate with each other.
