Some reprieve for illegal immigrants who came to the US as children cause they are able to avoid deportation and are eligible to get work permits. This is according to an order president Barack Obama put on Friday. An Order that didn't go down well with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney who accused Obama of political motivation.
An accusation David Plouffe, a senior White House adviser denies saying it was not a political move but rather an "enforcement discretion decision" by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In an interview with CBS on a program "Face the Nation" where Romney questioned the presidents timing.
"If he really wanted to make a solution that dealt with these kids or with illegal immigration in America, then this is something he would have taken up in his first 3 1/2 years, not in his last few months."
The majority of this group are Hispanic and count for 800,000 people of which is a considerable chunk of votes. When asked if he thought Obama's order was politically influenced Romney said, "That's certainly a big part of the equation."
Obama's administration has came under heavy criticism from Hispanic groups for deporting 400,000 illegal immigrants a year ago. Romney who has taken a hard stand on illegal immigrants saying he favored "self-deportation" which is basically illegal immigrants realizing for themselves they would be better off returning to their native countries after employment restrictions left them unable to find work in the United States.
David Plouffe said the administration's decision meant that the focus of immigration enforcement could be where it should be - "on criminals, those that cause or can endanger our community."
