Opposing Clinton's health care plan in 1993, Bill Kristol wrote an infamous memo:
The long term political effects of a successful Clinton health care bill will be even worse — much worse. It will relegitimize middle-class dependency for “security” on government spending and regulation. It will revive the reputation of the party that spends and regulates, the Democrats, as the generous protector of middle-class interests. And it will at the same time strike a punishing blow against Republican claims to defend the middle class by restraining government…
Kristol's cynical, but honest memo lays bare the dark heart of Republican obstruction: We must defeat anything that helps people because it might elect Democrats.
Kristol said that the health care bill must be stopped because it might work!
I take Kristol at his word. In fact, Kristol's prophecy echoes LBJ's warning about passing the Civil Rights Bill -- that passage meant the South was lost to the Dems for a generation. Here's hoping that Kristol's prediction is as true as LBJ's.
Mitt Romney said yesterday that Obama was probably "not sleeping well" because the ACA was going to lose in the Court today. Hah!
But Bill Kristol will be having nightmares for a while -- nightmares showing that people like the ACA!
