Mormon's believe some wacky stuff. Glen Beck is a Mormon. If the shoe were on the other foot, and the Democratic candidate were the member of a minority religion founded by a guy who called this followers to lie to non-believers in order to take over the country when he ran for president, I think Republicans would use it against Democrats. I guess my version is subtle enough but maybe this would work? Maybe not a good idea? Or would it work and Democrats are just hopelessly whimpy?
If Obama is down in the polls, he could play the Mormon card hard late in the game:
"My opponent has changed his mind on abortion rights, gay rights, health care, just about everything. The only thing he has never changed his mind about is his religion.
"Like his ancestors, Mitt Romney is a Mormon. Let's talk about what Mormon's believe. Mormon's have the doctrine of the white horse, calling for the secret take over of the government. Mormon's believe it is okay to lie to people are not Mormon's in order to take over the government on behalf of their religion. Mitt Romney has never challenged his religion. We know Mormons would lie to take over the country.
"I, on the other hand, am a Christian. I do not change my mind on fundamental issues like the rights of women and gays. My religion tells me that I must be true to my beliefs, as Jesus of Nazareth was to his.
"Now, some will say that I am criticizing Mitt Romney's religion. Yes, I am. From the point of view of someone with a strong Christian faith like me, a religion that countenances lying and cheating deserves to be criticized. Mitt Romney himself should criticize the more obnoxious doctrines of his faith. If he doesn't we know why. He believes everything his religion teaches. If he believes in the doctrine of the white horse, he should not be President of the United States.
"Based on his flip flopping over the years, we have no idea what Mitt Romney believes. We only know that he is a Mormon. And we know what they believe."
That ought to under cut the guy a bit. Some risk to it. I would hold it for October and only use it if necessary.
