Here's a clip on intergenerational movement building (below the groovy squiggly thing) from the newly-released film, "Vocabulary of Change," which features a public dialogue between Angela Davis and myself, which took place in May, 2011 in Oakland, California.

The full film (and a Discussion Guide) can be purchased from SpeakOut, here. I post this because I think there is a lot of material in this film that Kossacks might find helpful to our larger organizing efforts. I am NOT posting it for commercial gain. I will receive no money from sales of the video generated by this post, so it is for movement based reasons that I post it, not personal profit.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Long Beach State, the History Students' Association, of which I was the secretary, brought Angela Davis on campus to speak. The tickets were free, and we ran out almost immediately. Long Beach State opened up 200 more seats by enlarging the room by eliminating removable walls. It was standing room only. She was fantastic. Thanks for posting this.

defend the Democratic Party? Are you sure? Angela never defended the excesses of the CP in the USSR, and you damned well know it. If you reject the actions of Dems when they do evil and destructive things, that makes you no different or better than she: she did the same regarding the Soviet CP. But if you generally defend Dems, you are generally defending a party that has collaborated with more destruction that the CP, so your critique is hypocritical…and, ya know…really white too…typical white leftie critiquing a woman of color about whom that white leftie knows nothing but what was heard at a speech once…great: ya know, go glorify whomever you revere (Nader, Kucinich, etc) and ignore real movement icons who did more to move this country forward in the past 20 minutes than you'll do in a lifetime...

I don't defend the crushing of disidents (when were you sent to Siberia, by the way?) yet you defend a person who thought it was completely justified for the Soviet Union to exile dissidents to Siberia.

But, go ahead. Angela Davis is a relic and nobody cares what she says anyway. Frankly, she was kind of a joke in the '80s too, but we all went to see her for nostagia's sake.

You're the one engaged in situational ethics. You defend and support the Democratic Party, although they helped kill far more people in the past 40 years than all the communists combined: not even close, in fact. Note, I vote for Democrats too most of the time, so I'm not saying its wrong to do so…but to slam Angela davis because she's a communist/socialist, as if you can hang the crimes of those regimes on her is hypocritical, when you associate with a Party every bit as destructive at its worst...

  •  the sad thing (4+ / 0-)

…about the red baiting on this thread is multifold:

    1. It's what liberals always did to radicals, thereby weakening the struggles for labor rights, civil rights, etc.

    2. It doesn't work on its own terms: moderates - so called - don't get impressed by liberals slamming of radicals…it merely undermines the larger social justice narrative shared by many on the left, regardless of how far..

    3. It ignores history: fact is, NOTHING that liberals have ever accomplished in this country (and certainly nothing that the Dem Party has) would have happened without the work of radicals and even communists. When the CP was fighting for labor rights, the Dems were doing nothing, other than, ya know, supporting bans on wildcat strikes/sympathy strikes, passing labor legislation that actually weakened the rights of workers relative to capital, rather than expanding them, and red baiting in a way that weakened the larger struggle. When the CP was fighting for black freedom, Dems were…well, I think you know. Doing nothing, or even supporting repression. Even FDR compromised black interests by opposing anti lynching legislation to get southern dem support for the New Deal, the benefits of which were almost exclusively enjoyed by white workers. This doesn't mean people shouldn't have voted for FDR or other Dems. Elections and voting are tactics. That is all. But from a movement perspective, the role of radicals, including socialists and communists, in pushing forward a left agenda (and thereby making liberal reforms possible) cannot be denied by any reasonably sane person…but I guess it is denied by certain kossacks, who actually think JFK was progressive and LBJ was awesome, that whole murder in SE Asia thing notwithstanding...

As for her support of the USSR? Meh. I never cared. What she gave to people through her words was so, so much more important.

Trying to give the CP credit for the work of the Longshoremen in establishing the first nondiscrimination policies is laughable.

But this is what adherents of the CP in the US have always done - try to take credit for the achievements of the Democratic or Concensus based movements on the Left that they actively tried to end.
