Imagine a little restaurant in the seaside resort where you vacation. Everyone is so busy there at this time of year you would think that no one had time for labor strife. You would be wrong. Story below the squiggle.
This must happen in a million places every year at the bottom of the labor chain. A new owner will be coming in, but the old owner ensures that everyone will be able to keep their job (this empty promise hopes to avoid the present staff from just heading out the door to find another job). The new owner comes in and realizes that he can cut some costs by cutting payroll in the kitchen, which can be accomplished by using cheaper help. Contrary to what Republicans will have you believe, people want to work, so there is a pool of cheap inexperienced help available all the time.
One at a time, the new owner introduces a new hire into the kitchen and expects the help to train the new person and bring them up to speed. The rationale is that a new person is needed to give the experienced people a break from the million hour weeks they have been working (this is a resort town, remember). After the second newbie shows up (in about a week), the kitchen crew realizes they are training their own replacements who will be working for lower wages.
The old staff starts to bail out as they find other employment, usually for less than they made before, and sometimes in the same role as the newbies who replaced them.
The only workers not subject to this crap are the waitstaff. They are paid so little that their costs cannot be cut, although sometimes they might be convinced to tip out another worker who has been brought in so the owner can pay less.
I am so rotten that when my wife tells me about this happening at her place of employment I want to know what their union has to say about it. Ha-Ha!
At the bottom of the chain you can expect:
Low pay
No paid days off
No healthcare
No profit-sharing
No respect
Let the Romney supporters in the Hamptons wrap their heads around that situation and tell us again how a different President is going to make a difference in their lives.
