Short diary because I'm heading to D.C. to sight see and then to Baltimore to watch the Liverpool FC and Tottenham match this Saturday.
As a tax professor, I subscribe to Paul Caron's TaxProf blog. At times the comments from the many right-wing trolls can be depressing, but in general, the articles presented allow me to keep up with the ever changing subject of tax.
One of the entries today was from Ari Fleischer's Wall Street Journal Op-Ed entitled, "President Obama and Tax Fairness." (I apologize for not linking directly to the WSJ piece, but I cannot get the website to load in on my computer. I will try later if I have the time. Edited: Here is the link that now appears to be working to the original Fleischer piece in the WSJ.)
The piece by Ari is the same old arguments the right trots out regarding taxation: "The rich pay more than their fair share;" "President Obama is practicing class warfare;" "President Obama is dividing not leading;" etc. However, there is one paragraph that truly shows how disillusion Ari and his fellow Republicans are (my emphasis):
One reason our country is so divided is because the president keeps dividing us. If taxes need to be raised to fight a war or fund a cause, the president should ask everyone to pitch in. If the need is national, the solution should be national—and that includes all of us.
Doesn't Ari remember anything about taxes and paying for war from his time in the White House? If he needs a refresher here's a quick synopsis:
Huge tax cut + Two front war = Massive Debt
I don't remember his boss rallying the American people to pay more taxes to fight HIS war. All I remember W. telling us to do is go shopping!
See you all after my trip to Baltimore: Go LFC! YNWA!
