It turns out, I've now become a Republican. And I'm not only a Republican, but I am "one of America's most notable Republicans ...." And it MUST be true, because I got a letter from Mitt Romney telling me it was so!
It also asks for a "major gift," and helpfully points out that the first $5,000 of any gift I make will go to the Rmoney for President campaign. It goes on to ask if I will help "with a contribution of $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 or some other amount."
The last time I made a contribution to any Republican was a small one to John McCain in the 2000 primaries, and that's because I was convined Dubya would be a disaster. I turned around and contributed to Gore once Dubya got the nomination. All I can say is that the Rmoney campaign is using some awfully old mailing lists to identify who are the "America's most notable Republicans." And they're obviously not targetting small donors -- not with the smallest amount mentioned in the letter being $1,000.
If it was return postage paid, I'd send my "contribution" as a letter saying what I thought of Mr. Rmoney, but since it's not, I just hope they keep spending money on mailings to me and other similar examples of "America's most notable Republicans."
And now that they've reminded me, I'm going to go make another contribution to the Obama campaign. I would urge anyone who can possibly afford it to do the same! Here is a link where you can do it online (and shockingly, they don't start at $1,000 and go up from there to $50,000): https://contribute.barackobama.com/...
