Mitch McConnell: Why don't they like us?
In a
story about Republicans trying to figure out if they'll completely dismantle the social contract as we know it now or later, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell muses about and bemoans the fact that Republicans just have received the majorities they need.
[...] We haven’t had enough votes. We have elections in this country and the winners get to make policy and the losers go home. And the Democrats have had Congress, sometimes with whopping majorities, most of the time since the New Deal. And that’s a great disappointment—I think that’s the reason the country has the kind of debt and deficit that it has, because we’ve not been able to secure the support of enough of the American people to have the kind of big majorities you need to kind of roll things back. Maybe some day we’ll have that. I hope so.”
Remarkably, McConnell is admitting Republicans are total losers who just can't get enough of the people on their side! Now, that might lead some to some introspection about what it is that the party might be doing wrong. To think about the possibility that the reason Republicans haven't been able to secure the support of enough of the American people to get those majorities is because the majority of the American people think Republicans have really bad ideas.
But instead of changing some of those ideas, Republicans have made them even more entrenched, even more extreme. They've decided that the problem isn't with them, it's with who's voting. There's just too many of us going to the polls. Hence voter suppression. Letting the American people pick the winners isn't working. So they'll pick the American people who are allowed to pick the winner.
Obviously, denying McConnell his majority this cycle is of paramount importance. Rejecting a roll-back of the New Deal is of huge importance. But for the long-term, if we're ever going to get a Republican Party that actually functions as a working part of government, they have to be defeated now, soundly and repeatedly. There's no other way they're going to get a clue that maybe what they need to be doing is evolving. That is, if they don't manage to roll back voting rights to the point that only white, male property owners get to vote.
