Four years ago I diaried about an event that would prove to be a harbinger of things to come: Bobblection 2008. At the time, the St. Louis Cardinals Single-A affiliate Quad Cities River Bandits held their first ever Bobblehead election and then Senator Barack Obama, like he would a mere three months later, defeated John McCain in a landslide.
Tonight: Round two.
I realize my title gives away the outcome, but follow me past the squiggle for the pics and details.
So here's the deal: the first 500 fans in attendance got to cast their vote by choosing which bobblehead they wanted - President Obama or Mitt Romney. Game time was at 5:00 against the Oakland A's affiliate Burlington Bees so we made sure to arrive at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, IA, plenty early. 3:00 seemed appropriate.
Despite the fact that it was raining (a rare event this summer), a line had already begun to form.
So we parked the car, grabbed our umbrellas and hopped in line. The entire kissfan clan was excited.
Ok, maybe it was just the youngest who was excited
Having only one line, it was difficult to tell who was in line for Obama and who was in line for Romney. Once they opened the gates however, it became obvious. As the ushers yelled "Obama line on the left, Romney on the right," it was clear the early arrivers were there to support the President. But it was early...
Once all four of us had cast our votes by selecting our bobbleheads, we went to find our seats.
Nice view
We got some food (the veggie wraps were pretty tasty) and drinks and settled in.
The affordable local beers didn't last long
Soon, the game got underway.
I kept trying to see which candidate was ahead but it was difficult to tell from my seat. By the time the park closed down the promotion however, the results were clear and it wasn't even close. Obama had won in a landslide... AGAIN!
The leftover Romney Bobbleheads
In the end, the River Bandits lost and we got rained on again before it was over. But a good time was had by all. And who knows? Maybe it's another harbinger of good things to come.
Thanks for reading!
The Bobblehead
