So around the Fourth of July, a strong storm passed through, an a couple very large trees (and a few smaller ones) fell. In addition to that, we had some dead and sickly ash trees that I had wanted cut down for a while, so I figured we could get all this tree removal done at once. One of the rewards was that we would be able to use the wood as firewood.
A couple weeks ago, the tree guys showed up and too k a couple days to cut everything down and saw it into lengths that could be split. We planned this week to rent a log splitter from the local hardware store and split it all in one day. That was yesterday. We extended the rental through today. And even though we're returning the splitter after today's work, we're still not done.

It has been a long time since I have done physical work as hard as I have over the past two days. First, there was a lot more wood in those trees than we had anticipated. Second, some of those trees were quite old, and so some of the trunk sections were enormous! Wrestling tree sections that are larger than 2 feet in diameter is not the sort of thing I do on a daily basis. Thank God we were using a gasoline-powered splitter and not the old-fashioned wedges and sledgehammers.
After two days of this, I think we're somewhat more than half done. We're going to have to rent the splitter again at some point to complete the job, but I think (I hope!) the worst is over.
Of course, all this wood is going to have to be stacked...
