Frankly, I didn't expect that there will be a discussion on this site whether we support a prosecution of the person suspected of rape or should he run away and hide from the charges. And there isn't. It looks like the opinion here is overwhelmingly on the side that say that he should not be prosecuted no matter what he did.
Because this is what the Assange case is about. It's not about Wikileaks, whistleblowers or human rights. All these things are irrelevant. It about whether people we like for other reasons should be prosecuted for the crimes they are charged with.
One argument for Assange is that the charges are completely made up and the only reason Sweden wants him is to immediately extradite him to US. The charges look real enough and are based on things that actually happened and Assange's team doesn't deny that they happened. Whether they will stand up in court, no one knows. But they are not simply the product of someone's imagination.
About the extradition. It's possible that US will ask for Assange to be extradited. However, it hasn't happened yet. US had plenty of time to do so and UK has an extradition treaty with US as well so they could have sent it to UK. There is no reason to believe (unless you love conspiracy theories) that Sweden will be necesarily more receptive to the extradition request than UK. And anyway any extradition request sent to Sweden will have to be approved by UK as well.
Another issue that has been brought up is that Assange's team asked Sweden to promise that they won't extradite him to US. It's likely obvious to his lawyers that such promise is impossible so it's a PR move. Sweden has a treaty with US and it has to consider all extradition requests. It doesn't have to approve them all but it can't promise to reject a request without even seeing it. It may be possible for US to promise not to send an extradition request. I'm not sure if Assange's team asked for that.
But it's not the point. The point is no matter what happens with possible future US extradition request, Swedish charges are the only real ones against him right now. He can't pretend to be a refugee from rape charges. He should go to Sweden and deal with them. To claim that he should avoid Swedish charges is to say that we don't care what he did in Sweden and we don't want him prosecuted for it no matter what.
