I probably could have buried this diary in a million other ones today, as a mere comment, but it just makes me feel better to say this as a stand-alone diary. The birth certificate issue has gone, for us Obamaphiles, from a mildly amusing saga at it's inception, to a slightly scary issue at it's fever-peak, back to a joke when the "long-form" was released last year, to now being a source of shrugging. But what DOES it mean for non-whites? I mean, after all, most of us white folks would never be questioned about our American Authenticity in any way. Carte Blanche, so to speak, to do the normal things in the name of the American Dream.
But for African-Americans, Africans, Mexicans, Mestizos, and all brown, black or yellow people, this 'joke' topic is shot across the bow. If they keep coming for President Obama, you know they're going to come for you and your offspring soon: " You were born in Guatemala but you're now an American citizen? I don't think so- I think the Green card and application was forged." "You came from Viet Nam? That couldn't be true- The American Neocon magazine says no immigrants were allowed from that country in the year you claim to have gotten here." The rationales are, and will be, endless.
The lilly-white party sees itself not as a relic but a sleeping giant, The White Giant
Mitt Romney reminded us today that nobody's ever asked him for his birth certificate. It's also a reminder to his defenders and shock troops that they're for sure going to be asking for yours from now on.
