A pregnancy counseling center which focuses on persuading women not to undergo abortion but to carry their children then put them up for adoption was damaged today by what police are calling an "explosive/incendiary device." No injuries were reported, though two employees were in the center at the time and escaped before the fire ignited by the device spread.
While local and federal law enforcement refuse to describe the bombing as an act of "domestic terrorism," many pro-adoption leaders are linking today's attack to escalating rhetoric in the anti-adoption movement and increased harassment of women at adoption centers nationwide.
"It's very disturbing," said Marla Winters, president of the National Term Carriers Association. "Protesters will form rings around adoption centers and scream at women coming for counseling, showing huge, graphic pictures of children who were adopted then abused. I don't think I've seen quite this level of ugliness before."
While refusing to admit a trend, law enforcement authorities concede that anti-adoption violence has increased in recent years. Pro-adoption activists point to the murder of Dr. Jorge Miller as he attended church services as a symbol of the escalation.
"Dr. Miller was the only one willing to facilitate more difficult adoptions, and was murdered for it," said Winters. "They said they'd kill him, and they did."
Many have attempted to lay blame for Dr. Miller's killing at the feet of liberal TV personality Will O'Malley, who labled Miller "the mother-enslaver" on his show numerous times. O'Malley has denied any connection to Miller's murder. Neither he nor the ROX News network would comment for this story.
Note: The preceding bit of unlikeliness was occasioned by Mr. Douthat's column in today's New York Times, which contained, among other harebrained blather, a phrase I've not encountered before: "pro-choice extremists". This got me googling furiously, but so far I have yet to find an account of anyone murdered or their property destroyed because they didn't support reproductive choice.
