At last some relief from the sultry stifling days of summer!
Soon fall will be upon us again and we will be involved in harvest activities, even though harvest these days are more of a ritual than a reality for us city dwellers.
I look forward to these days with a certain amount of sorrow. I always do.
I say to myself, "Earth is giving us some good days now because she is getting ready for the Big Chill of winter when we will be willing to sell our oldest child for a drop of sweat."
I force myself, however, to enjoy the moment, even if it is an Earth trick.
I mount my bike in the late afternoon and ride along the Holston River and Reedy Creek. Everything is again returning to a lush green. The rains have refreshed the grass and weeds, and the hot sun has relented from its burning rays.
The children are out all over on scooters and with footballs. Our workers are honored with one last holiday of the summer.
The dog barks and the cat grooms herself. This September day finds peace in my town, and my bike gives me a fleeting moment of serenity and joy.
