Growing up in Colorado, everything I really did was outdoors. Year round I was in the mountains. In winter I skied, ice skated or went sledding. In summer I camped, fished, hiked or went mountain climbing, of course. I've actually climbed to the top of the majority of the "14,000 footers" in Colorado. Those were the days when there were no personal computers, internet, smart phones, computer games or hundreds of channels on TV. Everyone went outdoors for their source of fun and entertainment. Of course there were a lot less obese people then too.
A few times I did things that really should have been the last thing I ever did. Once I was climbing along the face of a cliff along a very narrow path that was between 4 and 6 inches wide. At one point, I found myself without any hand holds yet had to continue on. I couldn't go backwards because of being pressed against the cliff face like that. So I very slowly inched along sliding my body against the cliff. Then I felt myself start to pull away from the cliff...only my feet were touching the skinny path. I don't know how I did it, but I just willed my body to move back to the cliff face. It felt like a tractor beam came out from my belly a couple inches below my belly button and just "pulled me back" to the cliff face. I then continued along until I reached the other side. Only then did I look down to see how far the fall would have been. I never did anything like that again!
Another other thing I used to do with my friends was "glacier sliding" in the summers. As teenagers we would hike up to the top of glaciers in our Levi Strauss 501 jeans and huge honking hiking boots...grab a rock in each hand to steer with...and then just slide down glaciers. Of course you'd have to somehow stop before you got to the bottom or you'd just be destroyed by the moraine of sharp rocks at the bottom of the glacier between the end of the glacier and the pool of freezing water from glacier melt. It was as dangerous as could be (i.e. stupid).
Once, when glacier sliding, I went too far. There was no way I was going to stop in time because I was totally out of control. Realizing this, time suddenly went in slow motion (uh oh) and I knew what I had to attempt to do if I were to survive. When I flew off the bottom of the glacier, I put my skiing skills to work and literally "skied" on my hiking boots (thick Vibram soles) on the rabble of boulders at the end of the glacier. Somehow it worked!!! I did not fall onto the rocks to become hamburger meat. I ended up in the glacier pool which was 32.00001 degrees F. When I popped to the surface I yelled...but could not inhale. It was just so freezing cold that I could not breath but I still had to swim to the edge of that pool and get out. It took a little while before the shock of the cold wore off enough that I could breath again. The sunshine felt terrific once I got out of my freezing wet clothes.
I also did NOT do that again either.
What memorable outdoor crazy or fun thing have you done?
