He has shown us who he is. We must believe him.
He's flipped; he's flopped. He's looked at facts from both sides now, yet still somehow, it's facts' illusions he recalls--he really doesn't know facts at all. Mr. Etch A Sketch. It's easy enough to buy that as the real Romney, but no.
Watching that video, you see a man saying what he really, really believes to be true. This is a non-pander moment: why would Romney need to pander to his peer group? They understand what he's doing, what he's going through, why he appears to have no conviction. Even if they have concerns about his talent for so doing, they would do the exact same thing if in his position: HIDE THEIR TRUE CONVICTIONS as much as possible, because the average American finds their true convictions anathema. Unelectable. To Be Avoided At All Costs.
Romney & Paul RAyn are indeed ideological comrades in their belief in Makers & Takers, the fundamental line of conservatism from Rand to Norquist, which is only ever discussed in the media via Fox News propaganda. George Lakoff (hopefully his post on this issue is coming soon) would characterize this founding conservative belief as a very strong expression of Strict Father morality. The 47% who, in Romney's view, refuse to take responsibility for their lives are those who value what conservatives have for decades now called the Nanny State, but what Lakoff describes as Nurturant Parent morality. Srtrict Father morality is virtually identical to Rand's Objectivism in economic terms: wealth = morality. Your financial success is the best measurement of your character & integrity. (Of course, this concept--whether Rand's, the Kochs', the "Prosperity Gospel," whatever--is totally destroyed by the example of the successful thief, but conservatives are never asked that question on camera.)
Now, I can't prove that this is the real, real Romney... but everyone has some bedrock belief somewhere. That Romney has said whatever he believed he needed to say in a given moment to advance himself is not an indication that he has no beliefs, but that his fundamental belief is in his own advancement. Selfishness. As Agent Smith put it in The Matrix Reloaded, "Me, Me, Me." Wealth = Morality, so get wealth. How one gets it is apparently beside the point. The acquired wealth is an unchallengeable authority; the true libertari-con religion. Sure, some Objectivists have thought about this & raise objection to those who leverage government to acquire wealth instead of refusing assistance and building it All By Themselves*. David Koch's recent op-ed springs to mind; he wailed about those in the private sector who lobby the government for handouts, with zero acknowledgement of how his own industries benefit from same.
Those idealistic objectors are not like Koch; they aren't billionaire hypocrites. But here's the thing: having the money means it doesn't fucking matter if one is otherwise a hypocrite or not, because the MONEY is the foundation of the belief system, so if you have the MONEY, you are righteous.
Extreme wealth is a God one can account on. It's a megavalidating modern magic power that lets one do things the other 99.9999% of us mortals cannot.
It is in this false god, this Golden Calf--er, uh, Bull--that RMoney truly believes. It's the religion in which he was raised. And it is his belief that anyone not voting for him has chosen the path of collectivist, Taker immorality: the heretics that reject wealth as morality, as the only true evidence of personal responsibility. Even if Obama was up 51%, Romney would have said 51%. His belief is that those who work support Republicans & Strict Father strength-based, rugged-individual, powerful penis, I Built This morality, & believe as he does, & that those who don't work support Other Than Republicans & their pathetic, feminine, weak, pussy morality of caring & sharing. Whether he believes anything else is indecipherable... as he wants it. The blanker the slate--the better hidden his true belief--the more advancement potential he retains. That's the point. He's Mitt RMoney, & he approves whatever message is another rung on his ladder to success.
