A Mood of Gloom Afflicts the Romney Campaign
Grim-faced aides acknowledged that it was an unusually dark moment, made worse by the self-inflicted, seemingly avoidable nature of the wound. In low-volume, out-of-the-way conversations, a few of them are now wondering whether victory is still possible and whether they are entering McCain-Palin ticket territory.
It may prove a fleeting anxiety: national polls show the race remains close, even though Mr. Romney trails in some key swing states.
Still, a flustered adviser, describing the mood, said that the campaign was turning into a vulgar, unprintable phrase.
Wow, we are witnessing the complete crackup of the Romney campaign. And remember, Romney was the Republicans' best chance to beat Obama! He was the top of the line Republican!
It's going to be a long, ugly 49 days until the election. I suppose Romney has a floor of support, maybe 40%? But that will be tested in the following days.
Romney has no real constituency outside of the 1%, he only got the nomination because he was the last man standing. He was being beaten by Bachmann, Perry, Trump (!), Cain, Gingrich, and Santorum. He's the weakest presidential candidate in modern times.
