The afternoon, the US Senate Republicans in their continuing efforts to prevent the President from having a win, a bill he and his party supports, from becoming law ... succeed again!.
Going back to last week ...
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) put a hold on the Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012 (S. S.3457), insisting a bill he submitted, which has nothing to do with veterans, be voted on first, before proceeding to a vote on the Veterans Jobs bill.
The Hill reported:
The legislation, which would help train veterans and help them transition into police officers, firefighters and EMTs, as well as work in the park system, is mired in a political quagmire by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who wants a vote on his bill to end aid to Pakistan before letting the Senate take a vote.
This afternoon, with opposition to the bill being led by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), killed the bill, when a procedureal vote fell two votes short of the required 60. Minority rule succeeds again in killing an overwhelmingly popular bill that initially had 84-8 votes to bring it to the floor for consideration.
Think Progress reported, this afternoon:
Senate Republicans prevented a veterans’ jobs bill from coming to a vote today by forcing a budget point of order vote. Democrats came up 2 votes short of the 60 needed to defeat the GOP’s budget measure.
The Veterans Jobs Corps bill — which is part of President Obama’s push to secure jobs for veterans — would have provided $1 billion over five years to hire 20,000 young veterans for public lands jobs and prioritize vets for first responder jobs such as police, firefighter, or EMT. ...
When Republicans say they support our troops, veterans, service personnel, they lie.
