A new Gallup poll out on the CNN website shows that voters, especially independents, were less likely to support Mitt Romney following the release of tapes in which Romney categorized nearly half the nation as feeling they are "victims" who are "entitled" to government services.
(CNN) – The surreptitiously recorded video of Mitt Romney at a campaign fund-raiser has had a moderately negative effect on registered voters, a poll released Wednesday indicated.
The poll, taken Tuesday, showed 36% of registered voters indicating they would be less likely to vote for Romney after the tapes were released. Twenty percent said they were more likely to vote for Romney, and 43% said the tapes made no difference.
That's almost a two to one margin in terms of voters who have indicated that they are less likely to vote for Romney as opposed to more likely. The more likely crowd is probably composed of people who wouldn't vote for Obama even if he were running against Joseph Stalin.
But more importantly, let's have a look at how independents reacted:
Among independents, 15% said they were more likely to vote for Romney in November, compared to 29% who were less likely and 53% who said the tapes made no difference.
53% is a high number of independents who say the tapes make no difference, but those folks had probably made up their mind anyway. It would be really interesting to see how the supposed "undecideds" perceived the tapes.
