How shocking?
Did you have food everyday without robbing Peter to pay Paul?
It is a given if you are homeless good nutritious food is not going to be in the cards.
There is a meme going around facebook this morning that got me started on this thought.
Now I've been homeless many times and I know that getting an accurate count is difficult. I've never been counted AFAIK. And families living in cars and substandard housing are rarely found.
But I did find some statistics on hunger.
First number of billionaires:
According to the Forbes report released in March 2012, there are currently 1,226 U.S. dollar billionaires worldwide
And according to usda.gov there are:
In 2011, 5.7 percent of U.S. households (6.8 million households (PDF) and one-third of all food-insecure households) had very low food security. In these households, the food intake of some household members was reduced and normal eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year due to limited resources. The prevalence of very low food security returned to the level observed in 2008 and 2009, a statistically significant increase from the 5.4-percent level of 2010.
6,800,000 households for every 1,226 Billionaires translates into 5547 American households go hungry to support each Billionaire world wide.
5547:1
In the US alone.
This does not include the number of families that must starve world wide to support the same billionaire.
By request in the comments:
Family of four gets a maximum of 668 per month in food stamps. Not enough for a healthy diet (pdf).
668x12=8016
8016x5547= $44,464,752 per year from every billionaire would stop hunger in the US.
