We all remember Ann Romney's September 20 rant wherein she stated:
"it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt's qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country,"
Yesterday, David Corn on MSNBC talked about how Romney expected the electorate to greet him as the White Knight coming in to "rescue" an ailing nation and just didn't seem to be prepared to actually "earn" our trust and votes. David Corn's analysis seemed spot on to me.
I had the same thought a few weeks ago -- Romney is used to being regarded as the White Knight riding to the rescue, and gathering appreciation and reverence (from his investors) for being "willing" to come in and "rescue" a struggling company. Corn was absolutely right that he expected the same attitude from the electorate for deigning to leave his cushy life to "rescue" the nation.
Ann Romney corroborated that attitude in her September 21 rant, where she said:
"it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt's qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country,"
That's the difference between Obama and Romney that needs to be highlighted. Obama behaves in a way that indicates he knows the Presidency is a PRIVILEGE that allows him TO SERVE this country. The Romneys think WE are LUCKY that he would deign to "RUN" a country full of slackers and moochers.
I hope the Obama campaign makes this point clear to the public. Romney sees the Presidency as an "entitlement" stemming from his success in the financial sector. Obama sees the Presidency as a privilege of service to the country.
Hats off to David Corn of Mother Jones. In a time when investigative journalism has been dismissed as too expensive and unable to compete with celebrity gossip, he is truly doing a great public service with actual investigative reporting.
