With the current situation is Europe it hard not to draw parallels with the past. There's a real depression on in Europe right now. They "don't have enough money." They are implementing austerity willy nilly. Let me tell you, austerity leads to fascism. We can see the beginnings in Greece right now.
"They immediately said if it's an issue with immigrants go to Golden Dawn," said the 38-year-old, who fearing for her job and safety, spoke only on condition of anonymity. "We don't condone Golden Dawn but there is an acute social problem that has come with the breakdown of feeling of security among lower and middle class people in the urban centre," she said. "If the police and official mechanism can't deliver and there is no recourse to justice, then you have to turn to other maverick solutions."
This is how it starts. People going with the party because the party accepts them because they're "right" in whatever way, be it racial, ethnic, political, whatever. But they get accepted and they need what the party offers. So they act like they belong, even if they don't really agree with the party. But them being there and appearing to agree is enough. It's enough to make it appear as if they have more support than they do.
The important thing is this: Greece is sliding to fascism, and the fascists are trying to expand. We need to be aware of this and be aware of how we deal with it. We need to remember that stopping fascism is the first of our goals, and we need to start talking abut how to do this.
I would love for comment from people with connections to Greece.
Sorry this is so short, but I'm not great at diaries and I really want to get this info out.
