Jim Messina announces the Obama Campaign Nearing 10 Million Donations, reports Alana Horowitz.

President Barack Obama's reelection campaign is nearing 10 million donations, according to an email from campaign manager Jim Messina.

"Tomorrow, we could hit 10 million grassroots donations in 2012 alone," he said. "It would be a historic milestone in grassroots politics, and a huge win for our way of building a campaign."

According to Messina, the campaign had 9,725,074 donations as of Saturday night.

The Obama campaign had raised $157 million more than the Mitt Romney campaign as of the end of August. That lead is mostly due to small contributions under $200.

This surprising surge in grass roots donations starting in August has helped us overcome what was expected to be a huge Romney advantage in advertising this last few months of the fall campaign.

Let's keep it up.

I'm going to make another donation today. Maybe you can too, to participate in what may be a historic day?  I"m going to see if I can copy the source code for the ONN widgets that connect people to the official donation and information sites. I also encourage those who have links to the donation sites of down-ticket candidates to include them in the comments.

Please help create a money bomb, today, for President Obama and More and Better Democrats all the way down the ticket.

David --

Our final quarterly fundraising deadline is here.

This is a huge deal: Tomorrow, we could hit 10 million grassroots donations in 2012 alone.

It would be a historic milestone in grassroots politics, and a huge win for our way of building a campaign.

We're at 9,725,074 now, and it's going to take a huge push to get there before tomorrow's midnight deadline, but I know we can do it.

Your support made a big difference in 2008 -- thank you. Every donation counts.

Will you chip in $15 or more now to support this campaign in the final stretch?

More soon,

12:10 PM PT: I couldn't get the ActBlue widget above to connect to the server, so I donated through my account on the official BarackObama site, and discovered I needed to update my address there anyway.

But, as an extra bonus for linking my account to something I'm getting a free Obama bumper sticker!   So, if you act now, maybe you can get bonuses too!

Has anyone else had problems with the above ActBlue widget?  I can't tell whether the widget is broken or if I just have my firewall security settings to high?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

October donations have no real impact given the month is already budgeted for and it would be too late to spend a late surge of money.  So if you're planning on donating one more time before the election - today is the day to do it.

Also this in the last day in Q3 - so think if your favorite down ticket races as well.  It is even more important to beat the deadline for these down ticket races because they can only spend what they have, and can't risk going into debt because they have virtually no chance to fundraise to pay off any debt - especially in non-incumbent Dem as challenger races.  So they'll spend money they know they have in hand.

Also if Pres Obama shows a big edge over Romney's official campaign this month it might be impetus for OFA to decide to expand their map and make a play for Arizona.

If you have plans for one last donation - make it today.

just got from the R/R campaign:

We are approaching our most important fundraising deadline yet at midnight on Sunday.

With roughly a month left until Election Day, every dollar is critical to helping Mitt and Paul, and conservatives across the country secure a victory.

Your donation will help us continue to close the Obama machine's fundraising advantage. We've already reduced that advantage from $100 million to $37 million.

Thanks to supporters like you, we've built a record-breaking ground operation. Indeed, a nationwide network of 73,000 hardworking volunteers has helped us reach 26 million voters and identify over 2 million swing voters.

That means we've made 6 times more phone calls and knocked on 16 times more doors than we did during the entire 2008 campaign. That's pretty incredible.

Your donation bolsters our pivotal ground game, which is essential for a win. It will also help us ramp up our Absentee Ballot and Early Vote Turnout programs and support our Election Day efforts overall.

We know that times are tough, and we understand the value of every dollar you donate. We know that a $5 donation is the cost of a burger, a $25 donation is the cost of a shirt, a $50 donation is the cost of a restaurant meal, and a $100 donation is the cost of a grocery trip.

These are sacrifices you're willing to make in order to invest in your children's and our country's future. And we can't even begin to tell you how grateful we are.

This is the most important election of our lifetime, and this is your opportunity to make a difference. Let's leave it all on the field.

We can't afford four more years of Barack Obama. With your help, we can ensure that Mitt, Paul, and the entire Republican team deliver a winning season -- and a real recovery -- donate today.

HoundDog, from the comments, it looks like you've drummed up some grassroots donations that may not have happened without the inspiration of your diary.

I just want to add that if you live in Oregon, the state gives a tax credit for donations to candidates on our ballot and PACS that operate in the state.

Which means that you can donate to Obama and it won't cost you a dime. There's a cap to how much you can give and still be eligible for the credit. You can learn more about it here:

Scroll down the list to "Political Contributions."

Your credit is equal to your contribution, but limited to $100 on a joint return or $50 on a single or separate return.
The credit is "use it or lose it" so it's well-worth looking into.

  •  $275 million in September? (1+ / 0-)
    Recommended by:

I'm trying to use this data to estimate Obama's September fundraising.

What is a "grassroots donation"? Anything donation $200? Is it the same thing as a "small donation"?

Assuming yes, follow my math here and tell me why I'm wrong.

As of August 31st, Obama had $270 million in donations under $200.

The average "small donation" is $55-60.

$270 million in total small donations divided by the average of $55 per donation comes to about 5 million small donations.

If these assumptions are correct, then Obama has secured about 5 million small donations this month alone. At about $55 per donation that comes to approximately $275 million which would blow last month's $85 million out of the water.

That's outrageously high, right? What assumptions am I making that are wrong?

    •  These are excellent questions Tetris. (0+ / 0-)

Where did you get the $270 million number?  Is that accumulated small donations to day this election cycle?

I'm usually pretty good at math, but my concentration is split amongst about five things now, and I only have about 10 seconds to skim all the comments in this post.

I've google for more information on Messina's 10 million claim this afternoon, but could find nothing, We will no doubt hear tomorrow if we made the goal, and I'll post a breakdown, if you or someone else doesn't do it first.

Thanks for focusing my attention on this mystery.

      •  $270m figure (0+ / 0-)

I got $270 million from Obama's August 31, 2012 FEC filing of total donations less than $200. I'm assuming -- maybe incorrectly -- that these "donations less than $200" are the same thing as "grassroots donations" or "small donations".

We know the average "small donation" is $55 or so. $270 million divided by $55 is about 5 million. Which implies that Obama had 5 million small, i.e. grassroots, donations in September alone. And at another $55 a pop that gets us right back to the same $270 million ish range.

Even half that would be amazing. $270 million would be staggering. My interpretation of the phrases must be wrong but I don't know how.
