Howdy all.
I mostly lurk around here, but this morning I saw the headlines regarding Romney's comments to the Denver Post where he stated that he would honor temporary work permits for young illegal immigrants who were allowed to stay in the U.S. under the President's executive order. Great. Romney's making a deserate dash back to the center and hoping that the immigrant community's memory is short enough that he picks up some votes. Whatever.
But what struck me is his reasoning: "The people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two-year visa, should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. I'm not going to take something that they've purchased."
More below.
Romney's reasoning was not, "I'm not going to pull kids out of school and send them to live in a country with which they have zero familiarity," and it wasn't "I'm not going to criminalize young people who had no say in where they grew up," and it wasn't, "I'm not going to penalize people for trying to play by the rules, advance their educations, and go to work so they can legally contribute to America, the only home most of them have ever known."
No. Not Mitt. He said "I'm not going to take something that they've purchased." Because that's all this guy understands. A work permit is something you purchase, like, say, a couple of Cadillacs for the wife. Or a fifth house. To Mitt, the only value something or someone has is the dollar amount attached to it.
What an asshole.
And completely unrelated: I'm a proud Cherokee Nation citizen, and Scott Brown can go fuck himself.
