It'd go something like this,
Dear Mr. President:
Look, I'm not going to do any
handwringing over debates until after the election.
Mr. Romney won last night, but that's not as important as how he did it, as you know
(Parenthetical stage direction to head below the squiggle.)
He lied. You might use the word misrepresented. Or call it flipping. He did that during entire segments, and did not stop.
If you can turn it to your advantage Mr. President, the next two debates between you will leave a much different impression.
Tools in your toolbox:
Righteous anger. Don't fear it, use it. You won't come off as the "angry black man." You'll come off as the President handling a mendacious tool who wants to throw more money to people who have more than enough. It's not something to step away from when your opponent tells lies to the people he wants to govern. Perhaps you were advised that getting angry was a bad idea. I emphatically disagree.
Your foreign policy record. You have one, he doesn't. There have been missteps, but he doesn't have any credibility to call you on those, and there's been a great deal of good done.
Facts.
He won on style, not substance. This isn't the 2010 elections, so don't let his win get inside your head. As you prepare for the next debate, focus on not just your competencies, but his weaknesses, which are numerous and well documented. Or pull a Rove and use his strengths against him.
So he took the low ground of lies, and painted it gold. So what, Mr. President?
You already have the job he's trying to get hired for.
Call. Those. Lies. Out.
And up the energy a bit. Outright laughter or mocking of course won't serve you well...but perhaps an incredulous glance, a bit of a smile (since you don't smirk) now and again when he flips on whatever he said on a topic last week...
Lastly, some encouragement, since both you and the amazing First Lady looked like you needed some last evening.
So much of what you've done, and what you've tried to do has been amazing. You're bringing us around to a better time economically, and a better reputation as a country.
Whatever issues I have, I will table.
Because I won't stand for Mitt the constant liar in the White House.
I'm one of "the least of these," the ones that you've been trying to protect. I honor that and I'm grateful for that, even as I struggle.
I've still got one thing I can give you, Mr. President.
My vote.
