The Benghazi/CIA connection has been all but ignored by MSM since the Issa hearing abruptly shut down. There is plenty of chatter about it on the blogs, especially the conservative leaning ones. But it remains an interesting dilemma especially given the debates. As I understand it the Benghazi facility was a CIA outpost. The attack was on the CIA, not Ambassador Stevens and was carried out by up to 125 fighters armed with RPG's and mortars. No regular security force would have been equipped in a location as insecure as Benghazi to repel such an attack. The Ambassador was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is the question of what he was doing there instead of at the embassy in Tripoli which was set up for his personal security. Issa and John McCain have gone quiet on the issue since the Issa hearing ended. David Petreus has made no comment. That seems appropriate as they recognized this was a secret intelligence operation which should not be publicly discussed. Also, factual discussion eventually leads to the question of whether or not Stevens was at fault for being where he should not have been doing who knows what for the CIA. Nobody wants to indict the victim. The White House was perhaps a bit too quick to get out a cover story that didn't hold up well. Now we are hearing the only thing that can be said, that the investigation is ongoing. That's where it gets ugly.
President Obama has proven adept in managing his role in the covert arena of combating terrorism. He will not compromise national security to make political points in the debates. When the issue comes up the President simply can't talk about it and can't even say he can't talk about it.
So what about Romney/Ryan? For several months they have been receiving intelligence briefings. They know this was a CIA operation and they know the White House won't talk about it or acknowledge it. So they feel free to keep casting doubt and making accusations about what was reported when. The President got lucky in deflecting the whole thing in the last debate. I hope his luck holds.
