There are 18 days to go until the election. Today would have been my dad’s 93rd birthday. He passed away last December, and I want to write about him and honor his strong belief in America and his equally strong support for the Democratic Party
My dad was a first generation American, the youngest son of Russian/Jewish immigrants who escaped Czarist Russia. He was a Renaissance man. Although only a high school graduate, he was personally curious and extremely well read. I grew up listening to him reflect on the editorials in the two newspapers he and my mom read. I remember hearing my dad talking about Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged when it was first published. My brother and I were instructed about the Holocaust, and the dangers of nationalism. We learned to play chess and pay attention to foreign policy.
We watched the evening news and discussed it as a family. The television was on non-stop for the Kennedy Funeral and the Watergate hearings. My dad always said, America is not perfect, but we're willing to air our dirty laundry. He said, "the Republican Party is the party of the rich. We all knew we were not rich.
There is so much more I could share about my amazing dad, but I won't bore you. When he was 89 he still walked a couple of miles every day. In 2008, he walked past an Obama for President rally in our town and he applauded the people at the rally. They urged him to join them and he held an Obama sign for about 1/2 an hour.
Today, I'm holding up that sign, and I ask every one of you who read this diary to hold a sign somewhere to support Democrats and our President and move this country forward.
Donate to Obama here.
Peace and love,
Desert Rose
