Jonathan Cohn at The New Republic had a great article in today's online edition of the magazine on the President's Governing Vision Cohn on the President. The article was aptly titled, "Stupid Talking Point of the Day: Obama Hasn't Offered a Governing Vision".
Cohn hit on some major points that I have been saying along (of course, I have only been saying these things to my partner, which is like preaching to the choir), the President actually does have an economic plan and its the same plan (more or less) that he has had for some time. Its Romney who in fact doesn't have a plan to create more jobs (the economy is on track to create the 12 million jobs that are in Romney's rhetorical five point plan), to decrease the deficit (the holes in Romney's plan have been pointed out repeatedly) nor has Romney basically proposed anything else to improve the economy were he to win the election.
I continue to have a hard time understanding these voters who give this snake oil salesman higher marks on the economy (relative to the President). Yes, the recovery from the economic downturn has been slow and a bit uneven (you don't recover from a lost of 800,000 jobs a month overnight...it doesn't take a phd in economics to understand this concept).
I am reminded of an interview of the President by Diane Sawyer (whom I basically loathe) when she asked the President basically what he had been doing (again, b/c the economy hadn't been fully repaired (in 30-60 days I guess). It makes you want to shake your head and go WTF.
In part, I blame the Obama Administration for not doing a better job of telling their story, but I also have to hold (parts of) the electorate responsible for being so guilible.
Like Cohn said at the end of his, its fine if you don't like the things that the President is proposing (well, actually, its not fine, but to each her own), but let's not pretend that the President hasn't proposed some solutions or offered a vision of the economy. Similarly, let's certainly not pretend that Romney has offered anything of substance with regard to anything that he would do differently (other than lower taxes, which doesn't sound like the plan that we need). FORWARD! Obama/Biden 2012!
