We have been stuck in the grips of a drought for all of this year. To compound the situation the sheep market went from record highs last year ($2.50 lb) to the prices of this year ($0.75 lb.) Now we in agriculture have always ridden the highs and the lows of the market, but this is ridiculous. We have sold half of our ewe flock. That way we can have feed for the half that we have kept. We were planning on a certain amount of money to pay bills and land payments, but have to really scramble to make ends meet. It is hard to find USA lamb in the grocery store. Sam's Club has the most shelf space devoted to lamb in our region but it is mostly New Zealand or Australian lamb. Safeway stores have some lamb, but sometimes you have to ask the butcher because the lamb is kept in the back room. They have USA lamb and imported. They sell legs of $6.99 a pound and we get $0.75 for the leg.
