I am a white dude. I live in a pretty small rural town. I went to have an adult beverage at this bar a few blocks from me. Honestly until tonight if you came to my town I wouldn't be proud to take you there, but not ashamed either.
It is owned by a former Air Force guy and his wife, Korean, he met her while stationed in South Korea.
We're watching a few of the NBA games.
Then ....
The guy next to me says:
I don't need to see those monkeys playing games.
I will admit I am at times slow on the uptake. It took me a few seconds to process that. My first thought is he must have meant something else. So I said:
What did you say?
Those monkeys. Look at how they can jump. Not a sport for us white people.
He didn't say this under this breath. It was "loud and proud." I expected somebody to come to my defense, shout him down. I seemed to be alone. I will openly admit I paid my tab and just walked out of the place.
Will never enter it again.
This is like example #1,234 I could give on racism in this nation. But who is counting ....
