I received an interesting campaign mailer today, called the "California Public Safety Newsletter and Voter Guide".  It was interesting, in that it had some rather curious ballot initiative endorsements.

The curious initiative endorsements are:

  • No on 30
  • Yes on 31
  • Yes on 32

These are all the opposite of how the public safety unions in California look at those ballot initiatives. The "Yes on 32" one is particularly strange, considering it's supposedly from public safety employees.

There is a clue to who is really behind the mailer, in small print, where it says: "California Public Safety Voter Guide is a Special Project of the Policy Issues Institute"

Who are the "Policy Issues Institute"?

Well, they are a 501C4 "charity".   They also operate under the names:

Impeach Obama Campaign
PII
United States Investigative Unit
White House Watch, The

Who runs the "Policy Issues Institute"?  A guy named Floyd Brown.  Who is Floyd Brown?  I was not familiar with the name, but the Wikipedia article has some interesting information on him.  Some of his greatest "hits":

  • Creating the "Willy Horton" ad
  • Co-founding "Citizens United"
  • pushed the bogus Whitewater "scandal"
  • a website called "ExposeObama.com"

At the bottom of the Wikipedia article, there are some amusing quotes about Brown:

USA Today: "[Brown has] established himself as one of the nation's dirtiest political strategists"
George Stephanopoulos: "Floyd Brown is a slimy thug for hire."

I think that last quote pretty much sums up this guy, and his "newsletter".

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Every CA election has these fake "liberal" mailers (5+ / 0-)

Right-wing groups send these out near election day, when they hope they'll be read by low-information voters and taken as recommended votes for Democrats. They have one or two Democratic recommendations, as camouflage, and the rest are right-wing recommendations.

    Scumballs, as always.

i first moved out here in the early 80s.  I noticed some of the candidates had asterisks next to their names, it meant they had PAID to be on the card.  I knew the card was wrong because some of the Democratic-endorsed candidates were missing.

I remember wondering how this could be legal, with all the "Vote Democrat" and the donkey-flag emblem.

Deception is their object. They differ from run of the mill liars in that there is no ulterior motive. They don't lie to get something they want unjustly -- i.e. lying to steal -- they just do it to deceive. Deception, pure and simple, is what they are after, to demonstrate that they hate their victims.

Why did Satan hate Adam and Eve? Jealousy.

Why does Willard lie?  He likes it. He despises his victims. He abuses their trust.

All these flim flam artists and snake oils salesmen will have to go back to trying to get grandma to sell them her gold at .05% of ore value.

And then they will start in on the next election.

with 'yes on 33' visible. I figured they were paid for by someone I didn't want to associate with. (I've been tossing out all of the campaign mailers that show up in my box.)

And has been ever since I first met him at college in the late 1970s. Seems he's come down a bit in the world since his heady days of Willie Horton smears. But a human dung beetle like Mr. Brown will always make a decent living by what he steals out of blind men's cups.

without even reading them - doesn't matter who sends them.

But I did pull one out of the pile that was sent to me in Spanish by the idiotic woman that is running against my congresswoman - Debbie WS.

I have no idea what it says and I don't care.  It annoys me that she mailed it to me in Spanish, with a picture of herself with Rubio and Ros-Lehtinen.  I am not Hispanic.  My ex-husband's family came over from Cuba in 1957, he was born here in 1958.  He didn't learn Spanish until he was 40.  Just because I have a Hispanic last name, they assume I'm fluent in the language.

So I folded it up, typed a note and said "I am not Hispanic.  I am annoyed that you ASSUMED I was and sent me political literature I cannot read.  However, you don't need to send me a new one, because I wouldn't vote for you or Rubio if you were the last people on earth.  Ms. Ros-Lehtinen isn't even my district, but I suppose you put her in the picture because again, you assumed, I would vote for all the Cubans.  I love my representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and I've voted for her in every election.  I already voted for President Obama.  And when Mr. Rubio starts running again, I will vote for almost any opponent, because anybody who has not ruined regular Republicans with their tea party craziness and obstructiveness is better than him, or you.  Oh, and I will do my best to get Governor Scott out office in 2 years, also."

Then I put it in an envelope, stamped it and mailed it to her campaign office.  I hope she thinks it's a donation and opens it.
