My twenty-one year old son will be voting for Obama tomorrow. He will be voting tomorrow!!! Did you hear me? My son will be voting because ObamaCare saved him from hurting someone else, hurting himself, or dying.

You see, mental illness (bipolar II - Manic) claimed him on and off after 2006. At various times, my Caucasian suburban son was a legend in his own mind: a Mexican drug lord, a professional skateboarder, an African-American hip hop star, and a famous writer. Meanwhile, lifetime medical caps for treatment and therapy were reached early on and cobra kicked in for his 18th birthday. For a 2 year stretch, we paid at least $1200 monthly to give him psychiatric care and cover medications. There were hospitalizations, outpatient programs, arrests and judicial proceedings, rampages, car crashes, drugs, and suicidal ideations. We gave up on repairing our home. I stopped working to care for him.  We lived in HELL and FEAR for him and for us and for society.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was the beginning of a new life for him and our family. We were able to get him the intensive psychiatric care he needed to stabilize. He is learning how to live with his illness. We are healing as a family. YOUR VOTES in 2008 and 2012 for Obama helped to save him.

Thank you all from the bottom of a mother's heart.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

This is why we will not quit, will not give up.

Much love to you and your son.

All of them deserve to grow up with health care as a right!
We also lived through the fear and constant strain of a young adult child being ravaged by the onset of bipolar disorder. Three years ago, how could I have imagined that now, at 30, she'd be phonebanking for Obama and for Marriage Equality, serving on our local arts commission, volunteering for Habitat? We're still paying off the medical bills, but we have her back, vibrant, productive and thriving. Save Obamacare, save hope -- GOTV!!
