Tonight, the voters in Colorado took a step towards ending the war on drugs. They passed Amendment 64, which legalizes marijuana in Colorado for any adult 21 and over.
I never thought this day would come. Now the state has to work out a few details in the next year to implement this voter decision.

In a nutshell, here are the new rules in CO:
1. Persons over 21 years old can possess, use, and can purchase up to one ounce. Even out of state residents can consume and purchase marijuana while in this state.
2. You can grow up to six plants at a time. And you can keep the results (much more than one ounce) legally as long as they are kept in the same place the plants are grown.
3. You can NOT sell marijuana to anyone, you can ONLY transfer marijuana to someone else if you GIVE them an ounce or less for free.
4. Consumption in public is still illegal. You have to use it on your private property.
5. Employers can still drug test you and fire you for smoking marijuana. Driving under the influence is obviously still illegal.
6. Coming in 2013/2014 are marijuana retail stores, just like liquor stores. State government will regulate and tax similar to liquor (barring federal intervention).
It will be interesting to see what the Federal response will be to this measure. WA state also passed a legalization measure tonight.
Also, CO Amendment 64 also sets up the difference between hemp and marijuana and hopefully will start hemp growing in the state as well.
