That's what a conservative Internet friend told me on Skype the other day. I don't know the guy in real life. He's a game manager(GM) for an online game I play and I'm one of the forum moderators (FM) for the same game. Our relationship is entirely Internet based and because it's a business relationship first and foremost with an open room for all the mods to post in we stay away from controverial topics.
However, Monday the conversation briefly turned to voting. The GM said how important it was. Now I know he lives in the Bay Area here in California like me and the other FM who was online lived in Tennessee so I pointed out that while I agree voting is very important our votes don't mean as much as neither state is in doubt. He got a bit defensive about the "not matter" part of it and when I explained what I meant he then said the line that I have quoted in the title of this post.
I corrected him saying, "I haven't seen a single poll with Mitt above 45 and Obama is well over 50 and the final margin will be in the double digits."
That was pretty much the end of the conversation. From past interactions I know he's conservative and he knows I'm liberal. Between that and the obvious barrier about not talking politics at work we haven't talked much at all.
I just thought it was fascinating to see the effects of the Conservative news bubble at work. It's not the first time either. I've had a friend I know from real life tell me we need the $2T in additional spending for the Defense Department that Romney was calling for because we need a strong military. Never mind that our military is always by far the strongest military in the world. This second guy is smart, not racist, Christian but not nuts about it and has two daughters. However he honestly believes the rest of the BS he's been spoon fed for the last few years.
It's truly amazing how twisted things have gotten for the GOP voter. The ones who don't walk away have to contort the rest of their world view to make it fit the crap they are reading and hearing. It's cognitive dissonance at an extreme level. It's been shown time and time again in the other diaries about Karl Rove, Dick Morris, Rush Limbaugh and the rest. I just thought it was interesting to see it on a more personal level and admit the comment I quoted in the title struck me as the biggest indicator of all of them how ridiculous things have gotten inside the bubble of lies...
