Via the ThinkProgress Twitter feed comes this Miami Herald Story:
Romney campaign: We lost Florida
President Obama will win Florida when all votes are counted, judging from the makeup of the ballots still outstanding from heavily Democratic counties.
This then completes the election, giving Obama 332 EVs to Romney's 206, and completing Nate Silver's sweep of the state-by-state predictions of the Presidential race.
UPDATE
Now that this news is out there, allow me to editorialize:
I knew once the reports of long lines were out that we wouldn't know who won Florida until today. Upon the polls closing, the lines were still four hours long. I am hoping that everyone in line kept their resolve and waited to vote. But since the voting wouldn't be done until 11PM or later Florida time, there's just no way that the counting would be done until sometime Wednesday at least.
This is nonsense. Nobody should have to wait to vote this long.
I realize that the GOP has a vested interest in keeping the lines long, and so any suggestions I might make as to how to ameliorate the problem are unlikely to be carried forth. Nonetheless, may I suggest that Florida, and Ohio, and New York, and all the other states that reported long lines, might want to consider moving to an Oregon or Washington-style vote-by-mail system?
Vote-by-mail isn't bulletproof. There's still ways to mess with the ballots, as demonstrated in Clackamas county this last week. But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. No standing in line. You can vote with the voter's guide and the Internet right there to help you make an informed decision. If you can't afford a stamp, you can usually walk the ballot to your local library or other drop off site. If there's a problem, you have time to address it with the county elections office.
I personally would love to see vote-by-mail conducted in every state of the union and DC. I'm hoping that, if Obama and the Democrats are serious about ending long lines, they'll take a good, hard look at vote-by-mail as a practical solution.
