What is the nature of hate? Perhaps the question is simply more existential. Why?
So with fear and trembling, I pen this diary in a search and struggle for understanding.
On election night, just before the polls closed in Georgia, an African American church was burned by arsonists.
Shock. Outrage. Disgust. Sadness. It is futile to attempt to describe the sinking feeling and the pit of my stomach deep naseau I feel. Nevertheless, as outraged as I am, the better angels of our nature summon the courage to turn the other cheek. I am sharing this account because the sunlight is a most potent disinfectant for this most pernicious evil. And also because it is a tragic reminder of both the skeletons in our national (and regional) family closet AND how far we have come (think of what we accomplished Tuesday).
So let us resist the urge to traffic in outrage peddling and take solace in the words of the late RFK on the mindless menance of violence.
Peace and courage.
