KPOJ AM 620 Portland Oregon - A progressive radio station has gone FOX Sports overnight after nearly ten years. The station was owned by Clear Channel and therefore has also been a Bain company since 2008. The last time I had checked, the station had good ratings and advertisers. The timing of this looks bad coming only days after the election, causing ZappoDave of Oregon to comment "Sounds like someone who likes to fire people".

Below the fold ...

One of the most missed shows will be Carl in the Mornings. A local show with the morning news and interviews with Oregon Politicians and more with wit and humor.

KGO San Francisco owned by another outfit - also went to other formatting this year after decades. It appears the West Coast is losing what little Liberal Radio that was out there. This is a sad day.

There is also some discussion about this on - Thom Hartmann's Page

A Petition has been organized - Clear Channel suppresses progressive radio

Bernie Sanders often speaks of regulating Radio in a way that would give Liberal content a chance.

For now - It appears that Clear Channel/Bain Capitol have chosen that Radio has to be not 99 percent Conservative - but 100 percent.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

for a number of years and even the Evil Empire, Clear Channel, doesn't flip a format unless the numbers look much better in the new format. Flipping is expensive and a time consuming so the the decision to flip was done months ago.

I think I can safely say this is one of those decisions that was strictly business.

The 47% also "pay all the taxes that are legally required and not a dollar more" but when Romney does it he thinks it's a virtue, while when they do it, he thinks they are deadbeats.

and about 50% of the "sports format" has become right-wing talk radio. In addition, Fox Sports "reporters" are invariably neo-con supporters.

is in nursing care - the basic cable they have in her room gets FOX News as the ONLY News station! I flipped around and checked the schedule and no other news. No CNN .. nada.
When you turn the TV on - it goes straight to FOX News.

I've gone through Morning Sedition to Thom Hartmann to Carl, loved them all.  I am really going to miss KPOJ, in the morning, driving to and from work.  Carl's show was especially relevant for local issues, but he made it interesting for everyone as I believe was reflected by the number of out of state callers that streamed the show and called in.

Still looking for an alternative, KBOO's okay, but just doesn't do it for me.

I'm in the sweet spot of WA state where I could get KPOJ or KPTK -- Seattle. I will miss being able to hear KPOJ as I did enjoy Carl in the morning slot.

Re Fox sports...blech. They truly suck. And I agree re the sports guys tend to be wingers.

Does Portland have any other progressive radio options?

I can see Ann Romney telling Mitt "Why don't  you just fire everyone over at that Liberal KPOJ and maybe you'll feel better. You know how firing people always cheers you up".

We listened to KPOJ exclusively in the car, we streamed it on our phones via IheartRadio when we were in the barn or around the farm, we streamed it via internet when in the house.....

Husband liked Thom, I loved the more feisty radio Ed as opposed to TV Ed.  And Randi, oh Randi, how I will miss you.

Robert F Kennedy Jr and Mike Papantonio on Saturday afternoons while packing up after farmers markets and while doing deliveries on Saturday afternoons, buzzing around Portland, going chef to chef....

Alan Colmes on Sunday afternoons..... didn't know if I liked him or not at first but he grew on me..... and the morons who routinely called him made me feel oh so good about the direction we were trying to take the country...

So sad, so very sad but at least they waited until after the election. As an older Italian relative always said, "Tuti momente nascia funghi" or every moment a mushroom sprouts, or every moment an opportunity arises.  Maybe we will end up with a new generation of progressive voices.

Air America started out so long ago and has generated big gains even tho not actually surviving itself:  Al Franken.... Senator, Rachel.... tv personality, Cenk .... also a tv personality, Lawrence ODonnell.... tv personality, Ed Shultz.... tv personality, and more early contributors being heard and recognized by more listeners....

Now we have Current TV, MSNBC and Fox seems to be shriveling in relevance before our eyes.  Rush is swirling the bowl.  Tuti Momente nascia fungi...

You need to get on this.

You can get a Smartphone & stream KPTK.

But no liberal station in Portland?  That's like having no conservative station in Mobile Ala.!

  •  Check 2 see if the station's license up 4 renewal (1+ / 0-)

...stations have their licenses up for renewal every 7 years.  IT'S OUR PUBLIC AIRWAVES biotches!  You have to appear @ the station in person BUT THEY ARE OBLIGED TO OPEN THEIR RECORDS TO MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.

Then lie in wait until their license is up for renewal & petition the FCC; let 'em know that THEY AREN'T ACTING IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST.

How many sports stations are in Portland as opposed to liberal talk stations?  I think I know the answer to THAT one!

Will you miss progressive political programs on KPOJ (620 AM)?

    I voted "yes".  It's like 1700 to 6.
