I haven't seen anything about this here yet, but found the following articles interesting. The essence of both is that on a conference call to House Republicans last Wednesday Speaker Boehner admitted that they had to avoid the types of nasty showdowns we've seen in the past couple of years.

Members on the call, subdued and dark, murmured words of support — even a few who had been a thorn in the speaker’s side for much of this Congress
Granted, this is a two day old article about a day-after-election call with no quotes, but other quotes in the original article seem encouraging.
“To have a voice at the bargaining table, John Boehner has to be strong,” said Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, one of the speaker’s lieutenants. “Most members were just taught a lesson that you’re not going to get everything that you want. It was that kind of election.”
Don't take my word for it, though. Give 'em a read yourself!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  It's up to Boehner to control the craziacs. (6+ / 0-)

And I won't believe a word he says until legislation actually gets passed.

Everyone says pleasant things after an election. Boehner needs to put up or get out of the way.

There is a lot of risk for them to not make a deal -

if the public blames the House for their higher taxes, they could lose significant seats.

Also- there WILL be a deal some day -

and the Senate is much more favorable to them now than it will be in January - so if they want a conference committee they need to do it now.

Make that the only issue under discussion, not the whole package.

Then pass the debt ceiling increase.  Make the republicans show good faith and take the threats off the table.

Then negotiate tax reform, entitlement reform and the sequestration spending cuts.

They going to offer support for Obama's polices that they previously opposed and claim that he needs to support the policies in an effort to meet them half way. They're going to offer the illusion of compromise as the basis for compromise.

Everybody has to express willingness to negotiate, openness to other's ideas, sincere intention to put partisanship aside, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Then we hear from Boehner that of course he's going to negotiate in good faith, and the President and Dem members will find no more agreeable man than he, provided they bring up a plan that he can agree with. Nothing wrong with just a little revenue raised via increased economic activity resulting from a tax cut, or maybe some revenue from closing mortgage deduction loopholes. Yes, indeedy, he will be a very reasonable man on these things.
