This is a brief clip from the Thom Hartmann show, which explains why Democratic Socialism is actually a good and necessary instrument for a free society; its true meaning has been demonized by the right in order to allow the corporate rich to get even richer. The misguided have been told that any form of socialism is evil and can be compared to Nazism. Non-thinking people get very frightened to hear this analysis and will vote against anything they believe appears to resemble this disastrous form of government even if it means rejecting benefits that will improve their own well being. The Pied Piper Syndrome needs to be exposed so these people will start to think for themselves and make it possible for ALL the people in a commonwealth to reap the benefits not just the few.

A nation will not survive without Democratic Socialism. It's socialism that provides a fire department and police protection and schools to educate all children not just those born to the well off. How about FDA, we buy food that we know is safe because of Democratic Socialism. We take medicine and feel reassured that we are not committing hara kiri with each swallowed dose. If we have an emergency health episode we know a 911 call will send an ambulance to help save our life and when we hop on a bus, hail a cab or buy an airline ticket we feel convinced that we will be transported from point A to point B without devastating consequences because a Democratic Socialist Government will make sure there is oversight upon transportation corporations which will not allow them to cut corners in order to create more profits, at our peril.

Democratic Socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

who call Obama a socialist.  I think - "I know socialists, hell, I am a socialist, and he ain't no socialist."  Of course, sadly, it's getting harder to find a good socialist nowadays.  Even the traditionally socialist parties in Europe all seem to be sliding right and adopting neo-liberal policies.

But the incontrovertible proof it fails is the terrible standard of living in say Norway where they suffer a static economy, low wages, poor educational and health outcomes, trashed environment, rampant crime, hopelessness, corruption, inequality, and...and....wait a minute...what this?

(Yes I know many democratic socialists differ from social democrats, but the point stands).

But having oil does not guarantee it will be used to benefit the entire country, see Saudi Arabia. This response is frequent and I think misses the point. US has all kinds of natural resources. Canada. Mexico. South Africa. Many nations have fortunate resource endowments. Few use what they have wisely. None have used theirs as wisely as Norway (e.g. fantastic HDI, GINI numbers, best place for women and children in the world, enormous sovereign investment fund).

Just say it's what we have been doing for over 70 years. No need to wander off into the thicket of socialist taxonomy.

When I worked in Russia in 04 and 05, my Russian colleagues would occasionally refer to something in the past as being in "Soviet Times", with a tone suggesting that they were so glad to be past them that they hardly thought of them any more.

I think we can dispense with the old terminology, and probably should if we want to keep the good parts going forward.

    but, you can't fix stupid.

We live in a country where almost half of the half of the citizens that actually vote, vote in support of the people that are have lied to and robbed them for decades, and most of the other half are so frightened, ill-informed, and desperate that they blindly throw themselves behind anybody that tells them, "I'm not like the other guy", while robbing them.

to the average American they will NOT hear "democratic" or ANY OTHER adjective/modifier you put on it.

There are an awful lot of Americans who were born in the 20th century who remember "socialist" being used badly, and it usually involved people marching, lots of explosions and many, many, many prisons.

They remember Stalin was dedicated to "building SOCIALISM in one country"---while slaughtering farmers who owned more than one cow, sending millions to the Gulag, shooting down opponents in Katyn Forest.

They remember the Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics absorbing Armenia and Georgia in the 1920s and trying to do the same in the Baltic, later succeeding in 1940. They remember the Finns defending their homeland against the SOCIALISTS marching from their East.

They remember also that in contrast to the Moscow INTERNATIONALIST SOCIALISTS there were other NATIONAL SOCIALISTS: in Italy, Austria, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Japan. They let the capitalists make huge profits in arms industries, drafted surplus labor into the military and Ethiopia, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Burma, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Libya, Albania, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Yugoslavia, Greece, Crete.....and all this BEFORE turning on the INTERNATIONAL SOCIALISTS.

You may complain these were perversions and degenerate corruptions of the word SOCIALIST. You are probably right. But millions of Americans have serious and personal reasons for being highly allergic to the term "socialist." You can try to change their minds. You can wait them out and educate a new generation of people who can take a more relaxed view.

But I think trying to use the word "socialist" in American politics in the foreseeable future is akin to the peace protestors of the '60s using the word "immoral" to describe the war in Vietnam. Academically correct but politically useless.

    •  you had me until immoral (0+ / 0-)

you are wrong about the 60s and framing the war as immoral (based on what I can see, it is a small part of your comment).

Most Americans when polled believe that war was immoral - not unwise, misguided, good motives gone bad - but immoral. The reason they believe that now and that many began to believe it then is that the war was framed in moral and not merely instrumental of pragmatic terms. On that one score I believe you are in error.

Unfortunately the ignorant live their lives in a childlike state. They don’t or can’t think for themselves, therefore everything is frightening. They are not far removed from when our species lived in caves and were totally at the mercy of the unknown.  In this day and age, that is incredibly sad; sad because there is no excuse to be witless unless it is physical. I managed to escape indoctrination of redundant, forced through fear, religious brainwashing so really I don’t know what it’s like to live in such blind darkness of  mind. I wish I had a word, an elixir or a magic wand that I could wave and miraculously make everyone acknowledge the sheer joy of enlightenment through science but I don’t and maybe it’s good because I believe not all, sadly can handle it.

A search for truth will find injustice!

I'm proud to be a democratic Socialist. Here in Canada I have a Socialist government in my own province, and a Socialist opposition in Ottawa ready to take power from the Conservatives. Neither is as committed to the Socialist idea as I would like, but both are far better than any alternative.

I think in Europe this past day we're seeing a rebirth of the Socialist idea in the streets. I wish the best to our European brothers and sisters in their fight against "austerity", i.e. money for banksters, regardless of the consequences.

Democratic Socialists haven't done a good job about what it is and what they actually want to do.  A larger social welfare system apparently, but no real organizing philosophy as it were.
