Purple Heart
I just learned  that the VA and the veteran is about to get some very good news. Senator Patty Murray has done a good job but she is stepping down as head of the  VA Senate Affairs Committe.   How much better news could a veteran get than who the chairmanship is most likely going to?
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who stood toe to toe with the Obama administration on expanding government assistance for the caregivers of severely disabled combat veterans, will step down as chairwoman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee to take on a new and bigger role in shaping the federal budget.

Murray announced Thursday she will seek the chairmanship of the Senate Budget Committee in the 113th Congress, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of current chairman Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D.

Her move, which will receive almost certain approval from her fellow Senate Democrats, provides an opportunity for Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, an independent who caucuses with and receives committee assignments from Democrats, to become the new chairman of the veterans’ committee.

It just won't get any better than this for our returning veterans and current veterans waiting and waiting and needing..  The name Senator Bernard Sanders is about all there is to say when one thinks of compassion and making things work better .

I am speechless because I feel like for the first time since Max Cleland was Secretary of the Va. the huge beaucracy won't be put on hold and going through the motions.   This is indeed good news.  I can see WOW......I see a lot of inspections coming down on VA complaints.

I see backlogs being cleared.

I see accountability

I see more funding

I see no giving in

I see PROMISE !!!!
When Sen. Murray stood toe to toe regarding the caregivers act, this was a good thing.  Sen Murray I am sure did consider the stress that goes on top of the caregiver with the disabilities incurred in war.   She would not budge and neither will Senator Sanders.    I cannot see Senator Sanders letting the VA play games with VA lives...

“I had to really think about stepping down from the [veterans’] committee because these issues have been such a passion for me,” Murray said in an interview. “As I thought about it, I decided I could really fight for veterans just as strong on the budget committee.”

Murray said she will remain a member of the veterans’ committee and stay active on it. “They have not gotten rid of me,” she joked.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--(ENEWSPF)--November 13, 2012.  U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today said that Congress can and should do more to honor those who answer the call of duty and risk everything to defend America.  Specifically, Durbin called on members of the Senate to put aside partisan differences during the lame duck session to pass the Mental Health ACCESS Act – a bill that would improve the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)’s suicide prevention, counseling, and mental health staffing while expanding eligibility for some services to family members – and the Veterans Job Corps Act – a bipartisan plan that would put thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to work.
http://www.enewspf.com/...

I think I speak for Testvet's wife Dorrie and myself along with countless others that we really want this legislation pushed through as it goes further than the Caregiver Act of 2010 which was a huge piece of legislation for the Irag and Afghan vet.  This legislation offered up by Sen Dick Durbin (Illinois) takes the Caregiver Act to a more level field for all veterans.
No...I do not have access to respite or mental health treatment.  I do not get that much support as a caregiver.  This legislation means something and so does the work on the Veterans Affairs Committe.   Sen. Murray fought tooth and nail to get things done.  Some, little as they were.  Sen, Murray is not or would be the fighter Bernie Sanders is.   I like Patty Murray but I wanted someone relentless in that role.  She did fight the republicans on the Caregiver Act, however, as I said tooth and nail.   Sen. Sanders will fight for every piece of legislation IMO.
Now when the opposition starts showing partisianship when bullets do not know the difference between an R or D will show their petty politics before promises and people even on a larger scale, they will look even smaller in the eyes of the voting blocs  because a hurting veteran family knows no political party, they just know they are hurting.  They will look unamerican IMO to keep denying benefits.

This news is so awesome... Let's just get this done !!!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Great News on Bernie and for the Committee (8+ / 0-)

Especially, and you give Murray way too much credit, she didn't hold hearings yet we still have one occupation still ongoing, when they did she was more of a Burr with a skirt by laying All and any blame on the VA, showing her so called conservative side, and like the tepubs would lead with the old "we are here today to find out how we can help!", their jobs, then go into attack mode in questioning!! The only thing she didn't do like the tepubs was interrupt those being questioned so they could usually get their answers out, a favorite tactic of avoiding doing their jobs, the tepubs, while the continued push to privatize the agency by making them look as bad as possible with their constant under funding and obstruction in blocking much of what the VA needs!!

I expect Bernie will be much more like the House Committee once Majority head this past term the minority head, when the Dems controlled, Bob Filner, who I didn't want to see leave, but it's San Diego's gain as he was elected Mayor there this just done election, who went after the House tepubs even when he was the minority leader of that VA Committee.

And now maybe the Senate will be back to what it was before Murray under Inouye who got many things done under his tenure!!

Oh and Thanks for letting us know and for the link, going to post up on my site some about.

Lane Evans by no sense of the imagination and I suspect you are correct in your follow up on Bob Filner.
The VA has been dialed down for years.

Would be nice, except for a possible few, like especially anything close to a Burr, but Murray has been a huge disappointment to me especially with her backround, family, and the hype she gets. She did go to bat and won a few but it was more like I mention above, looking for points near an election!!

Don't count on that unless they get rid of the fillibuster!

And though you're right about Max, he tried a number of moves on issues but was blocked by the tepubs with the Clinton administration then, unless an election was coming and they'd past mostly meaningless legislation leaving the huge problems and ignoring vets in place, this Veterans Administration under Shinseki has been the most pro-active in my life time and they've been able to be, with the under funding and two more wars along with the obstruction and attacks, because they have an Administration and the Cabinet of backing them in what needs to be done or can be with the total obstruction, along with the wives and others around the Administration!!

and  he was plumb wore down by the repubs but I don't believe that will happen to Sanders.  I also think we are seeing a different president this time around.   No more Mr. Nice Guy.   The general is good and has been more pro active but the vet deamand is just too big right now without some things moving....Alas I am preaching to the choir Jimstaro, you know all this.. lol

  •  my senator! (6+ / 0-)

he is popular across the board in Vermont. I think RWers who really care about the people in the military should welcome someone like him. he is solid. listen, I was doing data entry in VT this last election, and there were plenty of voters voting all GOP except Bernie. He's a LWer who has proven ability to earn the trust of people who don't agree with LW views.

Socialist chairing the committee which oversees the largest single payer health care program in the country. We need to see to it that Sen. Sanders, excuse me - Chairman Sanders, is kept aware of his opportunity to really demonstrate how socialized health care can work, and then trumpet it from the rooftops!

yes this is a stepping stone I believe to single payer for
the rest of the country.  The argument has always been
oh ....too much red tape and back down from the various Chairpersons.  I think Chairman Sanders can knock this healthcare program out of the ball park and then have a stepping stone and model for the rest of the country,  If nothing else, maybe he can unify the care,  Create a model.  Instead of having 50 where some work and some are disgraceful.

      •  Last month I heard (0+ / 0-)

Tracy Gaudet, M.D., Director of the VA's Office of Patient Centered Care & Cultural Transformation (that's right, she's tasked with transforming the culture of the VA into a patient driven model) publicly say that she sees the VA as the model for health care delivery for the rest of the country.
Dr. Gaudet works directly for the UnderSecretary. The idea of the VA as the "tip of the spear" is already at the top.
