Saturday cracking!

Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

Pecans, of course!

I have the most awesome nut cracker ever.  I bought it like 30 plus years ago for an outrageous $25, but it is the best nut cracker I have ever used, and I doubt the design can be improved on for a home nutcracker.  It cracks almonds, filberts, pecans, walnuts, and other soft shell nuts. I've used it to crack acorns, too.

I've bought more of these nutcrackers for family and friends, that's how awesome I think it is.

You can't order one right now, because the man who makes them is back-logged and he's not taking orders until he catches up.

Yep, there's just one man making them. He's affectionately called "the nutcracker guy".

So, when he's caught up, if you crack your own nuts, you should really consider this inertia nutcracker.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

And I have to work today.

Ugh! Checking things, getting ready and then walking out the door.  A cloudy 62 here currently, with winds at about 10mph.  Thankfully it isn't raining!

Today is the first Chicago Kossack meet-up.  We are having lunch at Manny's deli.  It's the most famous deli in Chicago. I'm looking forward to meeting a bunch of new people.

55 degrees and sunny today, beautiful.

    Have a great day.

I am a work in progress. Still.

busy day yesterday. Draco put in a couple of job applications. We got some groceries including some things for Thanksgiving. Now we only need the last minute things I don't want to buy early either because I want them fresh or because they'll get eaten (whipped cream comes to mind).
I did buy myself one small splurge though. Lipton Vanilla Caramel Truffle tea. I found it on sale while we were lingering in Publix as the boy filled out his application. OMG it is SOOOO good!! I didn't even add any sweetener to it. $1.99 for 20 tea bags, not even that bad price wise.
We didn't get home until almost 8pm, because the bus was running an hour late. Draco did well though! by the end of the trip he was over stimulated, rocking and covering his eyes and ears, but he kept his head and didn't lash out, even verbally. It didn't help that it got cold with a damp chilly wind once the sun went down and we had to sit and wait for the bus forever. If it had just been him and Caedy they would have walked home and he would have been better, but I'm not capable of walking almost 3 miles any longer. Still by the time dinner was done and eating he was back out of his room, playing Wii games and chatting with Dad. Much much much better than how he would have handled things even a year ago. I'm proud of him.

picks up and drops off tractors.  Got a little paperwork to do, a little dusting, a little inventory stuff to organize.

The sun is very bright today, temp will rise to about 50.  I'm going to put some Irish spring soap in the branches of the baby fruit trees to discourage the deer since it will be warm and dry.

Gun season for deer started at dawn; my poor dog is afraid when he hears shots and went under the bed to live for the duration. We think some idiot started at 7:00 last night, I hope (s)he gets caught.  About 20 deer hang out in the field next to my house, it is too close to the road for legal hunting and gives them a safe spot to hang during the day all season long, but because they are so close, I need to protect the baby trees they can reach.

is news to me. I have baby cherry trees, would that work?
Well anyways, I haven't checked in for a while,
the storm, the elections, etc. Here, it is sunny and 46, no wind.
It is supposed to be below freezing tonight, weather I love.
We just got a new, very powerful generator, very easy
to use, and can power everything, no more power
      triaging.
Hope everyone has a great day!

nibbled the night after I planted them.  The pieces of soap are in old knee-high stockings, the "refresh" with each rain.

I am also using fencing, little pieces of plastic that flap in the wind and if I can get some, I will scatter human hair and the coyote urine drops to discourage the herd.

This is my second round of baby trees, and now I am going to be fiercely protective!

We got a new generater this year too; we sold the old, barely used one to someone who couldn't afford the last one we had in the store on the night before Sandy hit. We ended up needing the newer one ourselves, so we bought it.  It is a fine thing to have!

We had our plumber set up our replacement furnace with a special outlet and cord that will allow us to run the furnace from the generator.  We had a 7-10 day stretch in the past without power in the winter from an ice storm, and, as we are all getting on, there needs to be a warm place if that ever happens again.

It's our Saturday volunteer stint at Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center.  I'm giving the snakes a bath before we go (the notorious Jellybean and Jujubee) since they're not shedding as they should.  Jellybean nipped at me today, which means she's hungry.  It's been 4 days since their last meal of crickets, and The Bean is always prompt to let me know that Snakes Ain't Been Fed.
