Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell thinks only President Obama can break the so-called "log jam" status of the so-called "fiscal cliff" talks. On the senate floor, Mitch was at the top of his game, twisting words to make it sound like it's outreached Republican hands being slapped away by unreasonable Democrats that's causing any hold-up.
Republicans really have bent over backwards, he says:
“The only balanced approach is one that includes real and lasting reforms. So Republicans have stepped out of our comfort zone. We’ve been clear about what we’ll do and what we won’t. And yet we remain at an impasse.”
In McConnell's world, meeting Democrats more than half way means telling them nothing:
The GOP, meanwhile, has not specified which tax breaks it believes can be eliminated in any future tax reform to get the new revenue
And you know who's fault it really is? Take a guess:
“It’s time for the president to present a plan that rises above these reckless and radical voices on the hard left, that goes beyond the talking points of the campaign trail, and that has a realistic chance of passing the Congress.”
Who else? It's the radical, reckless, hard left's fault, as usual. Could republicans representing the interests of billionaires unwilling to pay a little more taxes, who have a track record of obstruction, Democratic presidential sabotage, and a general unwillingness to back down on anything, possibly share responsibility for a stalemate?
Never!
But the King Of Compromise, Mitch McConnell, has this message for you, Mr.President:
“So we’ll continue to wait on the president, and hope that he has what it takes to bring people together to forge a compromise. If he does, we’ll get there. If he doesn’t, we won’t. It’s that simple.”
Got that? Do you "have what it takes," Mr. President?
Yes, he does, just not in a flavor Republicans like:
Obama has insisted on higher tax rates for the wealthy as part of a deal, but has also resisted the sweeping Medicare cuts favored by the GOP.
President Obama and Democratic Congressional Leadership, please stand strong on this.
