...well, that is, until the shooter in question flees the scene, gets the score of carnage he inflicted later on the news, then turns himself in at a more convenient time. Oh, and they have a picture of the victim on the Orlando Sentinel site wearing a hoodie, isn't that fan-tastic.
Killed over playing loud music in a car, let that be a lesson to you all. I'll stick with my MP3 player. What's that, I can't hear you over the headphones. It's not safe? Compared to what!
Pardon my vexation. This really bothers me. But hey, at least I'm not shot. I'm alive to be irked.
Lt. Rob Schoonover of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department said 45-year-old Michael David Dunn and his girlfriend, both in town for Dunn's son's wedding, pulled up and asked the teens to turn down the music in their car.
Investigators reported that words were exchanged between Davis and Dunn, but did not elaborate.
You can guess what happened next, right? Roll up the window, turn up your own radio, stew a bit, no...I don't understand the thought process, because I don't own a gun. The claim is that the shooter felt threatened. Otherwise he's not talking much (yet) but his lawyer is.
"It will be very clear that Mr. Dunn acted very responsibly and as any responsible firearms owner would have acted under these circumstances," Lemonidis told reporters, but would not elaborate.
At least eight shots fired into an SUV, shooter didn't even know he'd killed anybody until long after he'd fled the scene, but hey. Responsible gun owner, am I right? The epitome of responsibility. Why just...you know,
flee the scene when you can blindly empty your weapon into a car and
then bolt? Why use the car you're sitting in when you can engage in a little
car wars action, first?
Schoonover said Dunn and his girlfriend were next to the red SUV containing Davis and three of his friends. Dunn’s girlfriend was inside when Dunn and Davis exchanged words. Shots were fired, leaving Davis hit and eight or nine bullet holes in the SUV, Schoonover said.
The couple drove off after Dunn told her he had “fired at these kids,” Schoonover said. They went to their hotel, then returned to Brevard County when they learned what had happened from local news.
As for the
hoodie thing, I don't know what to think. Seems unfortunate, that choice of picture.
And ThinkProgress reports that 'stand your ground' may be an issue, since the shooter is claiming self-defense. Same law they thought was doing just fine, thanks, after reviewing it...
Since Dunn is claiming self-defense, Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which earned infamy after Trayvon Martin’s killing, could be at issue in this case. After Martin’s death, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) appointed a task force to review the law that authorizes the unfettered use of deadly force in self-defense, but the panel didn’t recommend any significant changes.
The results of the governor's task force must come as a total shock, I'm sure. Why, that's right up there with them claiming the election went off so well! At least, they can say election day went according to plan. This too, perhaps.
Wed Nov 28, 2012 at 6:21 AM PT: I'd like to thank everyone who made a point to come here and stand up for guns, for stand your ground laws, and against 'audio assault vehicles,' a term I'm sure the writers are quite proud of.
As Jordan Davis lies dead I am sure his family would be comforted to know that so many folks have responded with such an outpouring of sympathy. Even as 'justifiable homicides' have exploded in Florida, be assured that your hearts are in the right places -- anywhere but with the dead. As fellow liberals, I love you all.
