I wish I was making this up. But I'm not that creative. This is just proof of the old adage that "Truth is stranger than fiction because fiction has to make sense; truth is not bound by that constraint."
(h/t to Jon Stewart at the Daily Show for pointing out this latest bit of folly) I am glad someone is watching FOX because it sure isn't me.
Here's the actual video of Bill O declaring "Christianity is not a religion." But Judaism is!
I don't know what you call it when you go so over the top that "jumping the shark" simply doesn't do it justice. But whatever that feat of mental gymnastics is called, Bill O'Reilly has cleared that bar with room to spare. Do I really need to add to this? I'm afraid anything I might add would diminish the delicious irony of this early Christmas gift to comedians everywhere.
Tue Dec 04, 2012 at 7:49 AM PT: Here's a portion of the transcript that relates to this nonsense claim:
O'Reilly: What religion is involved with Christmas? What religion?
Silverman: Christianity..
O'R: That's not a religion, that's a philosophy. [...] It is a fact that Christianity is not a religion, it is a philosophy. If the government were saying that the Methodist religion deserves a special place in the public square, I would be on your side.
S: So you're going actually to tell me on live television that Christianity is not a religion?
O'R: Correct, it is a philosophy.
S: You and I are going to fundamentally disagree on that point.
O'R: You are wrong. Roman Catholicism is a religion. Judaism is a religion.

Funny Bill thinks Judaism is a religion -- doesn't he know that's a philosophy and there are Conservative, Reform, Orthodox, and Hassidic religions? I'm surprised David Silverman didn't point that out to him. :)
