It is a cluster of double standards; much will be said, but those of us who are passionate about the equality of women will watch this whole story closely. In the end, the GOP should pay dearly for this, politically.
According to NBC news:
Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments, she told NBC News on Thursday.
“If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly – to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities,” Rice wrote in a letter to President Obama, saying she’s saddened by the partisan politics surrounding her prospects.
“That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country...Therefore, I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time,” she wrote in the letter obtained by NBC News.
The Republicans win here, but please, let this be a temporary win. Please, let us remember this as we approach 2014.
Women need to work together to eliminate the GOP men who are controlling the national conversation. We need to weed out those who made Rice the political fall girl. Condi Rice was able to get away with statements about weapons of national destruction and lies, lies and more lies were told about terrorism during the Bush administration.
Today a woman who would have served us well, intelligent, well-educated and with a sparkling resume - the woman who simply reported what she was told - now falls on her sword. Whether she was told to withdraw, or did it of her own volition, it is another loss for women and win for the GOP.
Something for us to remember in 2014.
